Mesh vs. Solid Safety Covers: What Winter Demands
Both mesh and solid safety covers are anchored to the pool deck with straps and hardware, and both meet ASTM safety standards for supporting the weight of a child or pet. The difference is in how each handles water and debris over the off-season, and that trade-off matters when you’re dealing with Pennsylvania’s freeze-thaw cycles.
Mesh Safety Covers
Mesh covers allow rain and snowmelt to pass through the material rather than pool on the surface. There’s no standing water to manage, which means no cover pump and easier handling at both installation and removal. Mesh covers are lighter, tend to cost less upfront, and typically last 10 to 15 years. The trade-off is that fine particles and UV light can pass through over the off-season, so you should expect a bit more cleanup work when you open in spring.
Solid Safety Covers
Solid covers block water, debris, and sunlight entirely. That can keep your pool water cleaner through winter and limit algae growth heading into spring opening. Because water accumulates on the surface rather than passing through, a cover pump is required, especially during the wet shoulder months of a Pennsylvania winter. Solid covers generally run higher upfront and have a typical lifespan of 7 to 11 years.
One important note: neither cover type replaces proper pool winterization. The water chemistry and plumbing need to be addressed before the cover goes on. That’s a separate step our crew can handle at the same visit as your cover installation.

We install covers on in-ground pools. For non-rectangular shapes, custom measurement is standard to ensure a proper fit. Deck material determines which hardware and drilling method we use for anchor placement, so the right approach varies pool to pool. Most installations are completed in a single visit. If you’re pairing the cover with a full pool closing, we handle both in one trip.
In spring, our crew can return to remove the cover and store it so it’s ready for the following season.

What’s the Difference Between a Safety Cover & a Standard Winter Tarp?
Safety covers are anchored to the pool deck with straps and hardware and are engineered to support the weight of a child or pet. Standard tarp covers lay over the pool, held down by water bags or weights around the perimeter. They offer no comparable structural support and aren’t designed to function as a safety barrier. They’re a cover in the basic sense only.
