Filter Types We Service & What Goes Wrong
Residential pools use one of three filter types, and each has its own failure patterns. Knowing which type you have helps us arrive prepared and diagnose faster.
Sand Filters
Sand filters rely on a multiport valve to direct water through the tank. A leaking or seized multiport valve is one of the most common repair calls we handle. When the valve fails, water can bypass filtration entirely or escape through the backwash port rather than returning to the pool. Sand media also breaks down over time and needs periodic replacement to maintain filtration efficiency.
Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters require regular removal and cleaning, but when cartridge media becomes worn or torn, cleaning alone won’t restore performance. D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters
D.E. filters use a grid coated with diatomaceous earth powder to capture fine particles. Torn grids, cracked manifolds, and worn D.E. that channels through the filter rather than distributing evenly are the typical repair points. These issues require disassembly and inspection, not a chemical fix.
Common symptoms across all three types include persistently cloudy water that doesn’t respond to chemical treatment, high or low readings on the filter pressure gauge, water returning to the pool with visible debris, and reduced flow at the return jets. Cracked filter tanks, worn O-rings, and failed pressure gauges are additional issues our team addresses before they affect the broader pool circulation system.
Repair vs. Replacement: How We Help You Decide
Not every filter problem calls for a full replacement, and not every filter is worth repairing. Our in-house team assesses condition on-site and gives you a straight answer. When the tank and valve body are structurally sound, repair is often the right call. Problems limited to filter media, cartridges, O-rings, or gauges are typically cost-effective to fix.
Replacement makes more sense when the tank is cracked, the valve body is beyond repair, or the filter is significantly undersized for the pool’s volume. An undersized filter can struggle to maintain water clarity no matter how well it’s maintained. Older filters can also present a parts availability problem. If replacement parts are no longer manufactured for your model, compatibility with current Hayward system components becomes a practical reason to move forward with a new unit rather than chasing a repair.
