What Common Pool Pump Symptoms May Mean
The sound and behavior of a malfunctioning pump can help narrow down the cause. The fault may involve the pool pump motor, impeller, seals, plumbing, electrical components, or filter and pump pairing.
Common symptoms we evaluate include:
- Grinding or squealing: Worn motor bearings or debris lodged in the impeller may produce persistent noise.
- Humming without starting: The causes can include a failed pump capacitor, which provides the initial electrical boost needed to start the motor, or a jammed impeller.
- Water around the housing: Leaks commonly come from worn shaft seals, damaged o-rings, or cracks along the housing seams.
- Failure to hold prime: Pump priming fills the pump and suction line with water so circulation can begin. Repeated loss of prime often points to an air leak on the suction side of the plumbing.
- Low return flow: A clogged impeller, restricted filter, closed valve, or air leak may reduce water movement.
- Repeated breaker trips: The motor, capacitor, wiring, or another electrical component may need further diagnosis.
A visible leak doesn’t always reveal its source, and replacing one component without finding the underlying fault may leave the original problem unresolved. We assess the equipment as installed and observe how its symptoms affect the rest of the system.
